Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is the core value which guides us.
It means that the entire world is one family.
This phrase is an integral part of Indian Philosophy which says:
“This is my own relative and that is a stranger’ – is the calculation of the narrow-minded;
for the magnanimous-hearts, however, the entire earth is but one family”.
We at Kutumb believe that a loving, caring & supportive family has the power to transform one’s life.
Therefore, at Kutumb, the power of the family is the main tool for our intervention
To create a compassionate family in the form of KUTUMB and develop a model of self-sustainable social organization with the values of

“Kutumb” (कुटुंब) means “family” in Hindi.
The idea of Kutumb was born in 2002 when a group of young social workers, led by Dr. Ashish and Puja, and Puja’s brother Vivek, dreamed of creating a family for those in need. Despite limited resources—even struggling to pay the registration fee—they chose courage over comfort and founded Kutumb as a space built on integrity, transparency, and human dignity.
Kutumb began with community visits in the slums of Varanasi, focusing on children trapped in addiction and poverty. Dr. Ashish opened Life Care Point, a small clinic, and soon a childcare program followed to provide a safe, drug-free environment.
In 2004, thanks to Nicola from Germany, Kutumb opened its first Shelter House with three children rescued from the railway station. Support from Kutumb-Familie für Benaras grew, enabling the launch of educational programs like the Kutumb School Team and Baalwadi.
From 2005 onward, international friends joined hands:
As needs grew, so did our vision: Kutumb Village—a permanent home for street children in a family environment.
In 2010, support from Vision Builders (USA) made it possible to purchase land and begin construction of Kutumb Village. With continued help from compassionate friends and volunteers, the Village opened in 2013, becoming a true home for children—with hostels, a community center, a pond, and spaces for activities.
Kutumb has grown into a vibrant family supported by partners and friends worldwide. From child development and education to healthcare, women’s empowerment, and community welfare, every initiative reflects our belief in “One World, One Family.”
We are deeply grateful for the love and trust of our global Kutumb family. Together, we continue to create opportunities, dignity, and millions of smiles.
“Every child on the planet has the right to the love, care, and safety that only a family can provide. Children will not be free of exploitation, however, until all layers of society, from the personal family to the larger international community, collaborate. The family is a child's first line of defence; without parental protection, vulnerable youngsters are exposed to all sorts of mistreatment and abuse. We at Kutumb work continuously with the same emotions and passion that we had in 2002. Today, Kutumb is relentlessly pursuing its dreams because of our children, staff and supporters. We see a future where everyone is happy and healthy. “
